NOTES FOR TEACHERS

THE APPLE PROJECT

From Botanical Drawing to Logo

Key Stage 3 (Year 8) Art and Design

This Project sits comfortably with National Curriculum guidelines for Key Stage 3 Art & Design (see National Curriculum online at www.nc.uk.net ), as students are challenged to engage not only with art and design in the contemporary world but with representations from a different time. Both practical drawing skills and critical / investigative skills are developed, allowing students to use visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings.

One worksheet deals with Botanical Drawing, the other with the design of Apple Logos.

Exploring and developing ideas:

Pupils will be investigating and creating various types of representation of apples in art and design, from Botanical Drawings to the use of logos in business and packaging design for cider and other apple based products.

Making art, craft and design:

Pupils will combine and manipulate materials, such as pencil, pastels, and watercolours to create a number of drawings of apples taking account of purpose and audience. Some pupils may want to experiment with drawing/graphics software for computers.

Evaluating and developing work:

Pupils will be encouraged to analyse and evaluate their own and other’s work, express opinions and make reasoned judgements. A framework of questions will be provided for initial guidance.

Knowledge and understanding:

Pupils will be introduced to continuity and change in the purposes and audiences of artist and designers and how materials and processes can be manipulated to match ideas. Codes and conventions will be explored.

Breadth of study:

Students will be researching the representation of apples in art and design in the locality, the wider community and perhaps on the Internet. A visit to the Hereford Cider Museum would be a distinct bonus, as pupils can familiarise themselves with a wide range of materials and interact with representations of apples in a real life situation thereby finding stimulation for new ideas.
