Shopping - Past, Present and Future Worksheet
KEY STAGE 3 (Year 8, Unit 9)
This exercise is an aspect of the settlement theme - retail service provision. Pupils learn about patterns and processes by investigating provision at local and regional scales, the possible impact of the Internet on shopping and how the provision of goods had changed over time. The cider industry is and has been an important sector in the local economy of Herefordshire. Not only production methods have changed over time, but the marketing and sales outlets of goods. Pupils will be able to investigate some of these changes by looking at the Apples and Pears Past website and consulting the database of interviews with local people involved in the cider industry.
The worksheet contains information sections interspersed with questions and exercises. The suggested discussions could be in pairs or tables with a whole class plenary at the end. To search the web site and database students would have to be online. Three interviews are included on various aspects of shopping for cider, one for each of the three periods of time discussed. A rather lengthy interview with a cider merchant involved in Internet sales (which can be omitted with lower sets) is reproduced to give additional source material for a variety of tasks. This interview may also be useful for a key stage 4 business studies class looking at the process of setting up a business.
Agriculture and Apple Orcharding
(GCSE, KS 4: Agriculture)
This worksheet deals with orcharding as a form of horticulture. This is a topic not usually covered by textbooks. A system’s diagram shows the inputs, processes and outputs. Topics such as intensity, geographic location and orcharding as a commercial enterprise are also dealt with. Some questions conclude the worksheet, which would be a suitable GCSE exam revision exercise.
The Carbon Footprint of Apple Orcharding
(GCSE, KS 4: Fossil Fuels and Global Warming)
This worksheet which has been placed in the science section, deals with the concept of Carbon Footprinting and its link to Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming. The carbon footprint of apple orcharding is calculated and discussed. How has the industry changed since industrialization? Why is more carbon dioxide emitted now during cider production than 150 years ago?
